The local authorities of Dorset and the New Forest
The local authorities of Dorset and the New Forest, with the responsibility of contaminated land regulation, have established a working partnership to ensure consistency and efficiency in the provision of regulatory and advisory services.
Issues concerning the contamination of land are dealt with largely through the development of land and the planning regime.
Historic contamination of land not subject to development is dealt with under PartIIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
PartIIA has concern with land that may not be fit for its current use because there exists 'significant harm or a significant possibility of harm' (i.e. the possibility of such harm to a receptor that might involve realised or potential human health issues, pollution of controlled waters or damage to the Environment).
